George Edwards: One Vote Changed Everything

George Edwards: One Vote Changed Everything

In 1997, George took a stand that would forever change the trajectory of the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District and the broader community. At the time, year-round schools were a contentious experiment. Families were frustrated with the disruption to traditional summer schedules, businesses struggled to adjust, and the overall quality of life in Cy-Fair was being tested.

When the decision came before the Cy-Fair ISD Board of Trustees, George had the courage and tenacity to call for the vote to end year-round schooling. It was not a popular position with everyone, however George believed that stability in the school calendar was essential for student success, family unity, and long-term community growth.

George's vision proved right. With traditional school calendars restored, Cy-Fair became more attractive to families relocating to Houston. Neighborhoods flourished, property values grew, and the district developed a reputation for balancing academic excellence with strong community support.

Today, the Cy-Fair area is consistently ranked as one of the best places to live in Houston. That recognition did not happen by accident. It happened, because leaders like George made a bold decision, guided by principle and conviction, that put families and children first.

The courage shown in 1997 continues to benefit every student, homeowner, and business in Cy-Fair nearly three decades later. George Edwards legacy is a reminder that one vote, taken with integrity, can transform an entire community for generations to come.

Because of George's decisive leadership, families found stability, neighborhoods thrived, and Cy-Fair became a model community. Nearly three decades later, the vision continues to shape the place we proudly call home.
